Community Guidelines and Terms of Use

1.0 PURPOSE 

The Mentoree serves to support educator professional learning, contribute to teacher well being and build efficacy. The Mentoree provides educators the opportunity to connect to and learn with/from a mentor of their choosing through one or more of our offerings including but not limited to: The OnEdMentors Podcast, 1:1 Mentorship, Conversations to Build Capacity, Motivators and Mpact.

2.0 SCOPE 

This scope of this guideline will cover the establishment and maintenance of The Mentoree’s work, as well as the roles and responsibilities of its facilitators and community participants. 

3.0 TERMS and DEFINITIONS 

“Mentor”: an individual who has committed to coaching, consulting, and collaborating with Mentee(s) through their participation in 1:1 Mentorship. These Mentors may also lead one of the Conversations to Build Capacity or Mpact(s) and be part of Motivators.

“Mentee”: an individual who has committed to being mentored through 1:1 Mentorship. A mentee has demonstrated intent to pursue professional goals including but not limited to learning about their areas of interest related to education. 

“Mentoring”: a voluntary process by which Mentors use their leadership in 1:1 or group scenarios while also fostering a sense of belonging to The Mentoree Community.

“The Mentoree”: the umbrella name or this community/space/place for supportive educational mentorship through one of more of our offerings including but not limited to: The OnEdMentors Podcast, 1:1 Mentorship, Conversations to Build Capacity, Motivators, and Mpact.

4.0 PROCEDURES 

4.1 Application Requirements 

Anyone joining The Mentoree community should be an educator, active or retired, or be in the Faculty of Education.

All Mentors and Mentees should satisfy the following criteria in order to apply: 

  • Be willing to adhere to The Mentoree’s Community Guidelines; 
  • Not have falsified information during the course of the screening process

4.2  Joining The Mentoree

We encourage all members to get to know The Mentoree by completing the orientation. Anyone who joins as a Mentor or Mentee is required to complete orientation and the related learning experiences.

4.3 Roles and Responsibilities 

The Role of The Mentoree in 1:1 Mentorship

The Mentoree provides a flexible platform for Mentors and Mentees to discuss the professional goals of the Mentee, as well as any and all experiences or ideas related to education and its related disciplines. The relationship building, meetings days/times/modes, goal setting and tracking are driven by the Mentor and Mentee. The Mentoree’s role is to provide ad hoc support, set the Mentors and Mentees up for effective mentorship relationships, and enable them to self direct their learning experiences.

The Role of the Mentor

The Mentor will complete a series of learning experiences before their profile can be added to our Mentor community and be available for selection by a Mentee.

  • The Mentor has no supervisory responsibility or authority over the mentee; 
  • the mentoring relationship takes place within a confidential and non-judgemental environment;
  • the parties to the relationship are equally responsible for the relationship; the overall developmental professional learning needs of the mentee are the main focus of the relationship.

Mentors are to provide their Mentees with support in the form of coaching, consulting and collaboration, answering questions and providing general support and guidance. 

Mentors are not expected to provide employment or business opportunities for theirMentees  or any other Mentees in the community. 

Mentors are not expected to, but are welcome to, remain in consistent contact with Mentees. The length of There is, however, no predetermined term or “shelf life” for a mentorship relationship is not predetermined or prescriptive. It may continue for as long as it is mutually beneficial.

Mentors can enjoy a variety of leadership opportunities including being listed as a Motivator or, leading/facilitating a Conversation to Build Capacity or an Mpact experience.

Mentors agree to keep their profiles updated.

 

The Role of Mentees

The Mentee will complete a series of learning experiences before they can search the community to find and reach out to a Mentor of their choice.

  • the mentoring relationship takes place within a confidential and non-judgemental environment;
  • the parties to the relationship are equally responsible for the relationship; the overall developmental professional learning needs of the mentee are the main focus of the relationship.
  • Mentees are required to commit to the base level of contact with their Mentor for the duration of their shared relationship.  That commitment can be determined, but is driven primarily by the needs of the Mentee in recognition of the time commitment/constraints of the Mentor

Mentees are responsible to demonstrate respect to the time invested by the Mentor by being on time for any scheduled meetings and taking a learning stance in their Mentorship relationship.

Mentees are encouraged to become Mentors at any point that they feel comfortable to do so.

Mentors and Mentees

Throughout the mentorship relationship, Mentors and Mentees may:

  • share expertise and experiences;
  • suggest solutions to problems;
  • act as a sounding board and provide alternative perspectives;
  • exchange feedback; 
  • introduce each other to people and networks to support their learning;
  • take responsibility for identifying and achieving their own development goals;
  • initiate meetings, manage meeting dates and times, and negotiate the agenda for discussions within the relationship;
  • listen, clarify, reflect back and discuss;
  • share expertise and experience; and
  • share feedback with each other about how the relationship is progressing in order to improve the outcomes they are working towards in mentoring meetings.

While there are no specific projects for the Mentor and Mentee pair to complete together during the program, it is expected that each participant commits to a minimum, consistent level of contact with their partner of at least one exchange each month. Ideally, Mentors and Mentees are expected to meet regularly or develop their relationship through ad hoc outreach and problem-solving.

 

The Mentor and Mentee share the duty to uphold the confidential nature of the relationship including the content of their conversations. They may share their learning publicly as long as both parties agree.

Mentors are not expected to provide employment or business opportunities for their Mentees  or any other Mentees in the community. 

The length of  mentorship relationships is not predetermined. It may continue for as long as it is mutually beneficial.

Mentors and Mentees are welcome to apply and participate in the various learning opportunities provided by The Mentoree. 

Mentors can enjoy a variety of leadership opportunities including being listed as a Motivator or leading/facilitating a Conversation to Build Capacity or an Mpact experience.

4.4 Code of Conduct

Mentors, Mentees and Mentoree community members agree to maintain a professional approach to this work. 

Members come from different backgrounds and contexts. This is a place for tolerance and voice,. No bullying, racist or harassment of any kind will be tolerated. Any of these or other behaviours unbecoming of any member of The Mentoree will result in removal from the community.

The Mentoree will mark each Mentor “Connected) once they have reached their capacity for Mentees (That is an individual choice. Some Mentees are interested in mentoring more than one Mentee at a time).

The Mentoree agrees to protect any contact or other information. We will not share it with other organizations or groups.

If you submit any social media handles, you may be tagged in posts.

The Mentoree agrees to delete all information once you leave the community.

Terms and Conditions

Posts and other insights shared through social media and other platforms may be used for presentations, promotions, and other communications in connection with The Mentoree. 

We hope you’ll come away from any mentorship experience at The Mentoree  with new ideas and learning and an improved sense of efficacy. As you think about implementing these new ideas, please consider their alignment with your school, board and district policies.

The Mentoree is not responsible for the words or advice shared by Mentors or the resulting actions taken by Mentees. As educational professionals, it is up to each individual educator to make determinations about their practice and implement advice in the context of their work and the standards of the profession.

Even though The Mentoree is board-less and borderless, we hold ourselves accountable to the Standards of Practice outlined by the Ontario College of Teachers, to which everyone on the leadership team belongs.
